'Come to the Light' pageant marks 50th production Saturday in Rowayton

The Rowayton Civic Association will present the 50th production of its Nativity pageant, "Come to the Light," on Saturday at the Rowayton School field.

The free event, featuring local clergy, a choir, neighborhood children and residents, and animals, will take place at 6 p.m. The school is located at 1 Roton Ave. The rain date is Sunday.

"Come to the Light" was co-founded in 1963 by Jane (Putsie) Ritchey, Louise McMahon and Howard Lenters in the weeks following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

"The pageant came about because our country was in a state of desperation. People needed something to lift their spirits. It's the story of Christmas, but it's really the story of hope and goodness in people," director Laura Czegledi said in a news release.

During the pageant, live animals join about 60 performers who portray the Nativity story's townspeople, angels, shepherds and wise men against a backdrop of almost 100 Christmas trees. The audience is also invited to join in singing, "Silent Night."
